I am currently in the fifth week of spring term at BYU. All I can say is I'm not sure how it all will turn out, and after the fact, I'm not really sure if I have a game plan. A game plan for what you ask? A game plan for the summer, for the duration of college, and for the rest of my life for that matter... but there is one thing that has stuck with me since finals week last semester: a series of posters hanging outside the library. Their 5 words of wisdom: Keep calm and carry on.
The posters were originally printed in 1939 by the British government seeking to boost morale in the face of impending attacks on their countrymen. They knew that challenges and uncertainty were the only certainty they could count on, and instead of letting Nazi Germany get the best of them, they did the best they could as a country to keep calm and carry on. And in turn, ordinary people accomplished remarkable things.
Could I have done anything about the finals facing me? Sure, I could have settled with whatever grade would have come from completely blowing the finals off. Can I do anything about my midterm for Econ 110 next week other than study my brains out? Probably not. And what about the rest of my life? Keep calm and carry on.
The fact is: life comes hand in hand with challenges, road bumps, and uncertainty. But if it weren't for opposition, then what would life be for in the first place anyway? We may not face Hitler, but it's good to surround ourselves with little reminders to "keep calm and carry on," "Be still and know that [He] is God," and to "Ponder anew what the Almighty can do."
We're here to do good things, and maybe even to surprise ourselves at the things we can accomplish by simply taking it one day at a time and trusting that Heavenly Father is in the details.
True story.
